Alot of people call a self drilling a tapping screw, here is the difference in the two. A tapping screw is a sheet metal screw with a sharp point to penetrate the metal. A self drilling screw is a sheet metal screw with a drill tip on the end, its also called a tek screw. A tapping screw can be used in more then just sheet metal, it can be used in wood, fiberglass or plastic. A self drilling screw is not recommended in applications where wood is being used.
